Hi! Our back addition is 1 story with novelty drop siding perhaps also known as dutchlap. My husband and I want to side over it board and batten, as we can get Tamarack boards milled inexpensively and this can help us make up for where there's uneven transitions where a side porch attaches. A few questions:
How thin can the boards be? We were thinking thinner because otherwise it'll build things out 1.5-2 inches in spots and we'd like to use the existing window trim. We were thinking we could use 1/2 inch boards to save on material, weight, and thickness.
Secondly, in terms of a rain screen and house wrap what should be used? The construction of board and batten has airflow gaps built in and then the siding itself has indents as well.... Is that sufficient? Perhaps using a Benjamin Obdyke slicker product or cedar breather? Or would tar paper and the construction elements are mentioned be sufficient as a rain screen?
Thank you! We are in the planning stages and trying to get materials lined up for this summer and appreciate the feedback and insight!
