Question for the wavy glass fans in the group... we need to replace the glass in a few of our windows. Do you buy old windows and reuse the glass? If so, what tips do you have for safe removal (not breaking it)?
If you buy new wavy glass (is that even a thing?) do you know of any resources in the KC area?

Shauncée Cooper DeLoach I use old glass from other windows. A fellow Old House Fixer mailed a few panes to me also.
Audrey Ford You can order new wavy glass, they can even replicate the specific time period. There are a few companies
Judy Hotchkiss @Audrey Ford you CAN replicate. You can also not toss out old because it is old.
Audrey Ford @Judy Hotchkiss very true. We have a bunch of original we plan to restore but also have some safety glass and caulk from the previous owner and want to restore that as well!
Nancy Costa I scavenge. I’ve stopped at old homes where I can see replacement windows are going in, and ask for the old ones. Also, it’s amazing how many people still have their old storm windows in their attic/barn, years after they replaced w/aluminum or vinyl. Just ask around.
Glenn McCusker I've dealt with this company before.http://www.restorationglass.com/
John Rodgers Moderator Group expert @Ruth Finnegan what sizes and how many do you need? I’m just north of you in Saint Joseph and have access to some.
Ruth Finnegan Author @John Rodgers 36x32... we have 4 panes to replace.
Ruth Finnegan Author. If you have anything in that size, I'd be super interested!
John Rodgers Moderator Group expert @Ruth Finnegan I think I can get 4. I’ll be out of town for a few days this coming week but will reach back out when I have them early the following week
Ruth Finnegan Author. Thanks, John! I appreciate the assist!
John Rodgers Moderator Group expert @Ruth Finnegan no problem, I’ll see what I can do. I think I’m able to get the old sash for about $5 a piece, and then I can pop the glass out. Do you need it cut to size or do you want the whole piece and y’all can cut?
Ruth Finnegan Author. If you are able to cut to size, that would be wonderful! Just write up a bill for your labor plus the window cost and I'll be glad to settle up!
Breanna Workman We bought old windows from a flea market and cut the glass to size with no problems. Cost us $4
Bambi Harris Marketplace is a decent source. The Habitat Restore in Lawrence, KS seems to have more old stuff than those in KC.
Ruth Finnegan Author. Thank you to everyone who responded. I guess I should have been more specific. I was looking for tips on specific methods for how to remove the glass from the "new" old window and put it into the existing window. Tools you use, e.t.c.Or, if you bought new wavy glass, where you purchased it from. We are huge proponents of historical preservation and use old every chance we can. Just bought 100+ yr old replacement trim off Marketplace the other day. But we're amateurs and are just learning about proper methods. Thank you to everyone who took the time to comment! It's much appreciated!
John Rodgers Moderator Group expert @Ruth Finnegan speedheater Cobra to soften the putty, followed by a sharp chisel or putty knife. Once putty is off run your putty knife or chisel all the way around to make sure there aren’t any hidden glazing points still holding the glass in, then slowly pry up from below
Ruth Finnegan Author. Thanks!
